National Parks Model Questions Agniver Exam 2023
In India, national parks hold a significant status as protected areas falling under the IUCN (International Union for Conservation of Nature) category II. The country’s first national park, established in 1936 in Uttarakhand and now known as Jim Corbett National Park, marked the beginning of this conservation movement. At that time, India had only five national parks. However, in 1972, India took a significant step forward in wildlife protection by enacting the Wildlife Protection Act, followed by the implementation of Project Tiger in 1973. These measures aimed to safeguard the habitats of species that heavily rely on conservation efforts. Presently, India boasts a total of 106 national parks. Further legislative measures were introduced in the 1980s, strengthening wildlife protection across the nation.
These 106 existing national parks in India cover an expansive area of 44,378 square kilometers (17,134 square miles), accounting for 1.35% of the country’s geographical expanse, as reported by the National Wildlife Database in December 2020. Additionally, there are 75 proposed national parks encompassing 16,608 square kilometers (6,412 square miles) within the Protected Area Network Report. Once fully implemented, this network will expand to 176 parks.
The Indian Ministry of Environment & Forests defines a national park as an area, whether or not it falls within a sanctuary, that can be designated as such by the state government. The notification is based on its ecological, faunal, floral, geomorphological, or zoological significance or association, necessitating the protection, propagation, or development of wildlife and its environment. Inside a national park, human activity is strictly prohibited, except for activities permitted by the Chief Wildlife Warden of the state under the conditions outlined in CHAPTER IV of the Wildlife Protection Act of 1972.
