The Agnipath Scheme is a 4-year tour of duty program introduced by the Indian government for the recruitment of non-commissioned soldiers into the three branches of the armed forces. Personnel recruited through this program are known as Agniveers, which is a new military rank. Despite criticism for lacking public discussion, the scheme was launched in September 2022.

What Is Agniveer Scheme?

The Indian Union Cabinet has approved an attractive scheme for young Indians to join the armed forces. The scheme is called Agnipath, and those selected for it are known as Agniveers. The scheme offers more than 46,000 positions with a requirement of 10th, 12th, or ITI qualifications.

Benefits of Agniveer Scheme

Agniveers will receive a customized, appealing monthly package and any applicable Risk and Hardship allowances in the three services. After four years of service, they will get a one-time Seva Nidhi package, made up of their contributions with interest, plus a government contribution equal to the total of their contributions and interest.

Angniveer Tax Exemption

The Seva Nidhi package will be tax-free. Agniveers will not receive gratuity or pension benefits. They will receive non-contributory life insurance coverage of Rs 48 lakhs during their engagement in the Indian Armed Forces.

Agnipath Skill Development Program

While serving the nation, Agniveers will gain military skills, experience, discipline, physical fitness, leadership, courage, and patriotism. After four years, they will join the civilian society and use their skills to contribute to nation-building. Each Agniveer will receive a certificate recognizing their skills, which will be part of their unique resume.

Post Agniveer Job Growth

After four years of service, the Agniveers will be mature and disciplined, with a desire to improve both professionally and personally. The opportunities for progress in the civilian world after their service will be a positive contribution to nation-building. Additionally, the Seva Nidhi package of approximately Rs 11.71 lakhs will allow Agniveers to pursue their dreams without financial strain, which is common for young people from financially disadvantaged backgrounds.

Armed Force Extended Tenure for Selected Individuals

Individuals selected for regular cadre in the Armed Forces must serve an additional minimum 15-year commitment and follow the current terms and conditions of service for Junior Commissioned Officers/Other Ranks in the Indian Army and their equivalents in the Indian Navy and Indian Air Force, as well as Non-Combatants in the Indian Air Force, which may be amended.

Terms and Conditions of the Agniveer Scheme

Under AGNIPATH, the Agniveers will serve the Armed Forces for four years under relevant Service Acts and occupy a unique rank separate from other existing ranks. Upon completing their four-year service, Agniveers may be given the chance to apply for a permanent position in the Armed Forces, subject to the organization’s needs and policies as they change. Applications will be evaluated centrally based on objective standards, including their performance over the four-year period, with a maximum of 25% of each cohort of Agniveers potentially being accepted into the regular cadre of the Armed Forces. Further guidelines will be provided at a later time.

Enrolment will take place through a centralized online system across all three branches of the Armed Forces. There will be specialized rallies and campus interviews conducted at recognized technical institutes such as Industrial Training Institutes and National Skills Qualification Framework, among others. Enrolment will occur through a nationwide system and eligible individuals must be between 17.5 to 21 years of age. Applicants must meet the medical requirements for joining the armed forces, based on their category/trade. Agniveers must meet the current education requirements for enrollment in various categories, such as having a Class 10 education to enroll as a General Duty (GD) soldier.
